Dental Crowns That Look Like Real Teeth!

Crowns or “caps” have been a reliable staple of dental treatment for decades, and advances in technology and in dental cements have allowed us to move away from traditional porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns and toward all-ceramic restorations.

What is an All-Ceramic Crown?

Traditional PFM crowns are composed of a layer of metal (a coping) that fits around the tooth and then a layer of porcelain that is baked onto the metal. The result is a crown that fits well around the teeth and is relatively esthetic. One of the limitations of PFM crowns is that because these types of crowns have a metal substructure, the porcelain tends to have a very opaque look to it and does not reflect light very well. And because natural teeth are not opaque, and because they do reflect light, PFM crowns don’t look exactly like real teeth.

All-ceramic crowns solve these esthetic problems because there is no metal present that needs to be “hidden” under the porcelain. All-ceramic crowns are made entirely of ceramic materials (types of porcelain) and these materials allow us to fabricate crowns that are much more life-like.

Should All Crowns be All-Ceramic?

Not necessarily. The major advantage of ceramic crowns vs. PFM crowns is the esthetics. Thus, in areas of the mouth where esthetics aren’t critical – such as is the case with the back teeth, PFM restorations are perfectly fine. However, in highly-esthetic areas such as the front teeth, ceramic crowns will look significantly better. And if you are a patient with a high smile line (where you see a large portion of the tooth when you smile), all-ceramic crowns will be a better choice in order to avoid the possibility of seeing the “black lines” that we sometimes get around older PFM crowns as the gums recede.

Real Patients, Real Testimonials

I went in and was immediately put at ease. They were willing to stay late to make sure my exam was through and a tentative plan was put into place. When I returned the following day to see the hygienist, a definitive plan was put into place and the doctor and staff made sure I understood each step and what was needed.

I don't really like to go to the Dentist but the staff and the Dr are awesome!! Very kind, happy and professional!! The Dr is very gentle and communicative; as he tells you what he is going to do in detail and is a warm, caring person.

Folks, if you're looking for a new dental practice...look NO further! My 1st phone call to schedule a consultation was met with a kind and caring person who seemed genuinely concerned with the problems and pain I was experiencing. Though her schedule was full, she managed to fit me in to see the dentist.
