What to Expect With Laser Teeth Whitening

Instead of feeling self-conscious about your smile, consider laser teeth whitening. Performed at a dental clinic, this is a great way to turn yellowed teeth into white, sparkling gems. Everyone experiences slightly different results. Some see a dramatic change. However, even a slight improvement makes a huge difference.

Benefits of teeth whitening

Just as the name implies, the most obvious benefit of teeth whitening is that it corrects discoloration. Also, the results are relatively easy to maintain. Most people go in for touchups about every six months or so. Whitening the teeth helps boost self-esteem and it makes people look more youthful as well.

What does laser teeth whitening consist of?

When it comes to whitening the teeth, people have several options. Of these, laser teeth whitening provides optimal results. For that reason, this has become the go-to solution for men and women of all ages.

In simple terms, this entails visiting a dentist’s office. There, a dental assistant takes a mold of the patient’s teeth. That way, they can customize the tray in which the concentrated hydrogen peroxide gel goes. After finding a comfortable position in the dental chair, the dentist fits the patient with protective eyewear.

Next, the dentist places a device in the mouth to keep it open and protect the gums. With the patient sitting quietly, a laser beam targets the teeth. The dentist or an assistant checks the patient roughly every 15 minutes. By doing so, the dental professional can make sure the individual achieves the whitest and brightest shade possible.

Laser teeth whitening is not a painful procedure. However, as the session nears its ending, some patients report a zinging or slight electric shock sensation. While initially alarming, this is normal. Rather than pain, the zaps are only a bit uncomfortable and they do not last long.

With the teeth whitening procedure done, the dentist removes the device and the tray. The patient then rinses the mouth to remove any of the gel. That is when things become really exciting. Handed a mirror, the patient can see the incredible change. In some cases, teeth whiten as much as six to eight shades.

Helpful things to know

As part of laser teeth whitening, the dentist will send the patient home with the customized tray and a lower dosage of peroxide. It should be used for about 30 minutes a day over the next week. Again, the patient may experience some of the same zapping sensation. Doing this at home works to further whiten the teeth and “lock in” the results from the dental clinic.

It is also important to note that most people need touchups. Depending on the severity of the discoloration and the desired results, some people have repeat treatments every six to 12 months. Every patient is different; that is why it is so important to talk to a dentist and make an appointment as soon as yellowing reoccurs.

Love that smile

While there are other teeth whitening options, the laser treatment works great. This particular method allows a person to achieve results quickly. Also, the results typically last longer compared to other treatments. Love your smile again by scheduling an appointment with your dentist.
